WINCHESTER City Council’s scheme to ‘deep clean’ the pedestrianised High Street began earlier this week.

Cleaners were seen near the Buttercross on February 5, starting the job that is expected to last for a couple of weeks.

The work will cost £10,000, although Cllr Jan Warwick, portfolio holder for environment, said this will be shared between Winchester City Council and Winchester Business Improvement District (BID).

She said it will bring back the original colour of the paving, and comes as Cllr Warwick said the council would be working with Hampshire County Council to maintain the city’s pavements, the subject of recent complaints.
