A SOUTHAMPTON teenager grabbed her mum by the throat and set fire to her brother’s clothes after bursting into a fit of rage.

Sapphire Sandhu unleashed a foul-mouthed rant at family members after her mum threw coffee over her during a heated argument at their home.

The 19-year-old then punched her mum “five or six times” in the head before leaving the room.

Sandhu then put her hand “tightly” around her mum’s throat and pushed her into a wall.

She also set fire to her brother’s £40 tracksuit bottoms in the bath, before having a quick change of heart and turning on the shower to extinguish the flames.

Sandhu was given a suspended sentence at Southampton Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to arson, assault, criminal damage and sending threatening messages, during the incident in December last year.

The jobless teenager also previously maintained a £100-a-week cannabis addiction, which she had managed to cut to £60 a week, in a bid to deal with her anxiety.

A sobbing Sandhu also stood up in court to give a personal apology to her mum and promised to get help.

She said: “I am trying to get help because I know that I need it.”

In sentencing, District Judge Peter Greenfield

said: “You’ve got to stop and think about your behaviour. The arson could have set fire to the whole house. This is serious stuff and I think you realise that.”

Judge Greenfield sentenced Sandhu to 12 weeks’ imprisonment for the assault, which he suspended for a year.

He also gave a consecutive 12 weeks’ imprisonment for the arson, which he also suspended for 12 months.

Sandhu, of Radcliffe Road, Northam, was also told to complete 35 rehabilitation days and told to pay court costs of £80.
