A LORRY driver is to be sentenced today over the death of two people in a serious crash on the M3.

John William Rogers, 65, will attend Winchester Crown Court this morning to be sentenced for two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

It follows a crash in which an Audi Q3 was crushed between two lorries on the northbound M3 between junction 9 at Winnall and junction 10 for Winchester.

Two people, Michael James, 77, of Broadstone, Dorset and Susan Curtis, 67, of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, died in the crash on June 5 last year.

Today, the court will hear how the DAF XF Articulated lorry being driven by Mr Rogers collided with the rear of Mr James’s Audi, shunting it into the rear of a Renault lorry, which subsequently collided with the rear of an ERF lorry.

Both Mr James and Mrs Curtis dead at the scene.

Mr Rogers was taken to Southampton General Hospital by Air Ambulance but was later discharged the same day.

The driver of the Renault sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital for treatment.

Mr Rogers was living in Alicante, Spain, at the time of the incident but is now believed to be living in Aberdare, Mid Glamorgan, Wales.

He changed his plea to guilty following a hearing at Winchester Crown Court on December 10, 2018.

A dangerous driving charge carries a sentencing range of between two and 14 years – depending on the seriousness of the offence.
