FIREFIGHTERS tackled a spate of bin fires in Winchester during the early hours of Monday.

Reports claim that about 12 wheelie bins were set alight in the Winnall area.

A 31-year-old man from Winchester has been detained on suspicion of causing criminal damage and police are asking for information to help with their enquiries.

Ten bins were set ablaze in Winnall Manor Road, one in Shepherds Road and more were set on fire in Longfield Road.

Keira Bowers, a student at the University of Winchester, living in Longfield Road, whose bin was torched, said: “I got in the early hours this morning and didn’t see anyone or anything around. Hopefully no one has been hurt and that it doesn’t happen again.”

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that a crew was called out to Longfield Road at 2.18am and again to Winnall Manor Road at 3.29am.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called to this area in the early hours of this morning to a report of several wheelie bins being set on fire.

“On police arrival there appeared to have been numerous bins damaged by being set on fire.”
