IT LOOKED more like New Year’s Day 1969, rather than 2019, as the King Alfred Buses returned the the city’s street.

The historic vehicles were brought back into service by Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) for members of the public on Tuesday.

In keeping with the policy of recent years, the main Running Day will be on the May Day Bank Holiday, May 6, but a smaller operation involving four King Alfred vehicles was run for those who couldn’t wait.

Passengers queued on The Broadway to take part in the long-established tradition, which operated between 9am and 4.30pm.

There was also due to be a free vintage bus service to/from Southampton with Hants & Dorset Bristol Lodekka 1577.

Founded in 1985, FoKAB is a Winchester-based transport heritage charity whose volunteers aim to preserve the memory of King Alfred Motor Services.
