PLANS have been submitted to install a CCTV camera at a Winchester city centre pub.

The proposal for the Pitcher and Piano, at the corner of Colebrook Street and the Broadway, would see the new camera installed above the front entrance.

According to the plans, the application has been submitted at the request of the police.

The plans follow an incident earlier this year in which a teenager was 'glassed'.

As previously reported, an 18-year-old man was taken to Southampton General Hospital after he was assaulted just after 1am on February 16.

He reported to Hampshire Constabulary that he was knocked to the floor when another man hit him with a glass. He said he was then kicked and punched while on the floor.

He was treated for a large laceration on his face, according to officers.

A police spokesman said: " We can confirm that we made a request to Pitcher and Piano to install a CCTV camera at the front entrance of their venue in Colebrook Street, Winchester.

"This is not related to a specific incident but it is an example of a venue taking an additional measure to ensure the safety of their customers.

"The licensing team at Hampshire Constabulary regularly works with license holders to see what steps they can take to improve security.

A decision on the planning application is expected early next year.
