THE MAIN backer of the Southampton Marathon has pledged its continued support for the annual event.

Title sponsor for the Southampton Marathon, ABP Southampton, has vowed continued support for community groups in the city.

A key part of the full marathon, half marathon and 10k races, is the support from the volunteer Mile Makers stationed at each milestone along the route.

This year, more than 850 volunteers took part in marshalling the course and ABP Southampton committed £250 to each of the community groups that took part in making each mile count for the runners.

Alastair Welch, ABP Southampton Director said: “We’re proud to continue our support of the marathon and in particular the community groups that play such a vital role in keeping spirits raised for everyone taking part.”

A total of 32 groups benefitted from the funding and included the Junior Neighbourhood Wardens, Nigerian Community, Solent University Redhawks, First and Second Southampton Scouts, Itchen Spitfires Running Club and Southampton Amateur Rowing Club.

This year, a total donation of £8,000 was made from ABP Southampton.

Race organiser, Chris Rees, said: “The ABP Southampton Mile Makers are a vital part of our event. Not only do they provide important marshalling duties but runners consistently tell us their cheering is part of what makes our event so fun and makes the ABP Southampton Marathon one of the best supported in the UK.

"We’re thrilled ABP is once again supporting the Mile Makers and giving such generous donations to those who lend a hand.”
