ORGANISATIONS are 'flying the flag' in support of Hampshire's transgender community in the run-up to an international event.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a world-wide bid to commemorate those who have lost their lives due to transphobic violence.

It comes as charity Chrysalis revealed that 26 per cent of its clients have attempted suicide - compared to 0.1 per cent in West Hampshire and nine per cent nationally."

As reported the trans support charity is asking organisations across Hampshire to show their solidarity with the community by flying the pink and blue flag.

Chrysalis CEO Andi Maratos said: "This year in the UK has been one of the most challenging in recent times: with a massive upsurge in transphobia in mainstream and social media as the government consulted on reforming the Gender Recognition Act. The rise in transphobia in day to day life, and an increased fear of transphobic hate crime means that trans+ people (who are already the most likely to attempt suicide, suffer from isolation anxiety and depression of all marginalised groups) and their significant others are now telling Chrysalis that they are even more scared.

"There’s plenty of evidence out there that those who are supported through transition have the best outcomes and are the least likely to regret decisions made.

"It’s really important to note that Chrysalis saves lives, this is something that our beneficiaries and former beneficiaries tell us all the time as well as it being borne out with reports from our facilitators and counsellors."

Solent University and Hampshire County Council have pledged to fly the flag.

Now Southampton University say they are getting on board the campaign by helping people travel to the TDOR event on November 20 at Guildhall Square.

The shuttle bus will leave Southampton University Students' Union between 5and 6pm on November 20.

People will gather at Above Bar venue The Art House from 5pm to collect a candle.

The candlelit vigil will be held at Guildhall Square from 6.30-7pm.

A 'remembrance and pride' event will then be held at The Stage Door on West Marlands Road with tickets costing £5 in advance or £8 on the door.

All profits will go to Chrysalis and Southampton Pride.
