A MAN has died after he was struck by a bus in the middle of a Hampshire town.

The 88-year-old was crossing a road in Hedge End when he was struck by a single decker bus – operated by Eastleigh-based firm Xelabus.

The crash happened around 6pm on Friday, November 16.

Police have now confirmed that the man died in hospital on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the force said: "The 88-year-old victim died from his injuries.

"We’re appealing for witnesses and asking for any dashcam footage people may have of the incident.

"Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and ask for the Totton Roads Policing Unit.

Police reviously confirmed that the man suffered a serious head injury in the crash.

He was rushed to Southampton General Hospital and was said to be in a life threatening condition.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary previously said: "An 88 year-old from Hedge End was in collision with a single decker bus.

"He is in a life threatening condition in Southampton General Hospital with a serious head injury.

"The road was shut for a while but reopened around 9pm."

South Central Ambulance Service also attended, but were unavailable for comment.

Gareth Blair, Managing Director of Xelabus said: “We as a company are deeply upset by this incident. 

"We are working with the Police to fully investigate.

"Our thoughts are very much with the gentleman and his family.

He added: "Our driver is very shaken up by this and we will be offering him our full support as a company.”

The company operates a number of routes through Hedge End, including the X4 and X5 services.

The X9, the 191 and the 411 also operate through the town.

The crash comes two years after an 8-year-old was knocked down by a car at the same junction.

The boy was by St John's Centre near the junction between St John's Road and Upper Northam Road in Hedge End when he was hit.

He suffered a leg injury in the crash.
