VILLAGERS are stepping up their efforts to improve safety at a country crossroads following another crash.

The chairman of Beauworth Parish Meeting in the village near Alresford fears that the junction could claim another victim soon.

Neil Saunders was speaking after a two-car crash on October 6 saw one vehicle flip over onto its roof outside the Milbury’s pub.

Mr Saunders is especially concerned that the white lines marking rights of way have become worn adding to the danger.

He is liaising with the new city councillor Hugh Lumby to press the highways authorities for action.

Mr Saunders said he has seen cars passing over the crossroads at speed without slowing.

He said the council council told him on a countywide programme of lining works but no timescale could be given and there is a backlog.

He said: “I expressed my extreme concern by the lack of the suitable road markings. I stated that it would only be a matter of time before there is a serious accident. I reminded them of the track record of accidents.”

Mr Saunders contacted the council again this week: “I again implored them to take action soon before a local person is seriously injured or killed.”

He urged villagers: “Please take extra care when approaching the crossroads. I always slow right down as I approach them and have my hand near the horn, just in case! It’s quite shocking when you see a car cross without slowing at perhaps 40mph or more.”
