AMONGST the thousands of University of Winchester graduates last week, 14 individuals were given honorary awards.

Those selected for the awards had either achieved an honorary doctorate or an honorary fellowship.

Bruce Parker: honorary fellowship for services to broadcasting and presenting.

Former presenter of South Today, and resident of Winchester, now chairman of Friends of Winchester Cathedral.

Sir John Timpson: honorary doctorate of letters for services to business.

John manages a number of brands including shoe repair and key-cutting business Timpson, which now has over 2,000 branches nationwide with profits of more than £20m.

Lord Williams of Oystermouth: honorary doctorate of arts for services to the public and social justice.

Lord Williams became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2002 and holds honorary doctorates from over a dozen institutions.

Stephen Baldwin: honorary fellowship for services to education and the university.

Stephen studied at King Alfred’s College between 1963-1966 and was the secretary of the King Alfred’s College Students’ Union. He has supported the university in a volunteer capacity since 1966 and is a year secretary.

Howard Horstead: honorary doctorate of letters for services to education and the university.

Howard has devoted over 60 years to supporting the University of Winchester and acted as chair for the panel of the Winton Club Benevolent Fund.

Lisa Willis: honorary fellowship for services to social work.

Lisa Willis has worked in the voluntary sector in Hampshire for the past 40 years and has been a visiting lecturer to the Southampton and Winchester universities.

Louise Shorter: honorary fellowship for services to rights campaigning.

From 1991 to 2008, Louise Shorter worked at the BBC and assisted with investigations into cases of miscarriages of justice and is the director and CEO of the Inside Justice charity that she founded in July 2010.

Wendy Allsopp: honorary fellowship for services to choreography.

Wendy coaches students with a special aptitude for dance. Former pupils have gone forward to dance with the Royal Ballet and other established dance companies.

Barry Cunningham: honorary doctorate of letters for services to business and literature.

Barry has worked with many famous names in children’s books including Roald Dahl and is now responsible for the marketing of all Penguin Books.

Leymah Gbowee: honorary doctorate of arts for services to social justice. 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist, best known for leading the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace.

Amanda Mackenzie: honorary doctorate of letters for services to business.

Amanda Mackenzie took up the role of chief executive of Business in the Community in October 2016.

Bill Nelson: honorary doctorate of arts for services to music.

He was the guitarist of Be-Bop Deluxe in 1973. The band released five studio albums and scored a top ten UK hit.

Lady Kay Norrington: honorary fellowship for services to choreography, spirituality and music.

Ben Smith: honorary fellowship for services to mental health issues.
