A FAMILY-RUN Indian takeaway in Winchester has proven one of the best in business at this year's British Takeaway Awards.

Sizzlers in Bridge Street is the only restaurant in the south east to feature as a finalist in three individual categories.

Salim Suyeb Ahmed, the managing director of Sizzlers said: "The three categories we have been nominated for are the Best Takeaway, the Best Chef and the Best Delivery Driver in the region.

"We were nominated last year for the Best Takeaway category four months since opening the place and reached the top five.

"This year we've been picked again, and in two other categories after gaining a strong local following."

Salim's wife Salina took the role of head chef at Sizzlers earlier this year and has reached the top five in the Best Chef category.

Salim said: "There really aren't many women chefs in Indian restaurants so for her to get this far alone is a huge achievement.

"My wife is a hard working mother of three who is incredibly busy during the day and then runs the restaurant at night."

His son Aqib has reached the top five in the Best Delivery Driver category.

A customer nominated Aqib for the award after he had helped him out.

The customer had called to say their car had broken down on the way to the restaurant and that he would be late collecting his takeaway.

Aqib delivered the order to the customer as he waited for the breakdown recovery vehicle.

The Sizzlers staff will find out if they have won in each of the categories during an award ceremony at The Savoy, London on November 12.

If they win, they will be presented with £1,000 and a free membership with Just Eat.
