A SHOCKING video has emerged of a driver using their phone at the wheel on a busy Hampshire motorway.
The video, shared by Hants Road Policing, shows a driver using the mobile device for at least 15 seconds while driving on the M27 near Whiteley.
The footage was taken from an unmarked lorry as part of a week-long police crackdown on drivers using their phones at the wheel.
Police caught around 40 motorists using or being distracted by a mobile phone.
Officers say the figure is down from the 162 caught in a similar operation last January.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "Recently we had an unmarked lorry to detect motorists being distracted or using mobile phones behind the wheel.
"We saw a big reduction in the numbers caught, last January 162 people were caught using a mobile phone or being distracted, this time round it was 40, this was largely due to a lot less offending being seen.
"On top of the phone use we caught eight not in proper control and 23 other offences from insecure loads, speeding and parking on hard shoulder."
Drivers who are caught face a six point penalty on their driving licence.
Motorists also face a £200 fine.
