RESIDENTS have spoken out about their 'shock' after a knife attack in the middle of a Southampton street.

One resident said the attack which took place on Barnfield Close has left her living in fear in her own home.

The attack took place on the evening of October 15 when a 22 year-old was stabbed in a knife at Barnfield close.

The man from Gosport was assaulted after 9pm by a group described by Hampshire Police as 'young men or teenage boys.'

The 22 year-old and his friend met the group in the Close before the attack took place.

Residents of Barnfield Close expressed their 'concern' to the Daily Echo on the morning after the incident.

Diane Lawson, 36, said: "I’m trying to bring up my son on my own and I don’t want him to be influenced by this sort of violence."

One resident said her friend witnessed the 22 year-old being 'battered' with a bat.

Another resident said she believed that the incident was drug related.

Tracy Essaid said: "There should be more police around, it's a quiet area.

"It makes you want to move."

Hampshire Police told the Echo that the man remains in hospital in a serious condition.

They added: "His injuries are not believed to be life threatening at this time.

"Officers are carrying out enquiries in the local area today.

"It is believed the incident occurred near a parked white or grey Fiesta."

Police are appealing for more information and are asking anyone who may have seen this vehicle to come forward.

Two residents told the Echo that they heard screaming and shouting outside before the incident took place.

A mother of two from the area said: "There are always young groups of kids down here, but there's never really any crime.

"It makes me feel unsafe to live here as I suffer from post traumatic stress disorder and news like this puts me on edge.

"I especially don't like that this has happened because of my children.

"I need to feel safe in my own home."

Other residents were less 'shocked' by the attack, another mother of two said: "It doesn't surprise me at all that it has happened around here."

Wayne Drewitt, 44, also said: "You don't expect it on your doorstep, but you just live with it and deal with it."

Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 and quote 44180388681.
