A NEW bar could open in Southampton if licensing chiefs give it the go-ahead.

Nook Bar and Kitchen is seeking to take over the premises left vacant by Casa Brasil, which moved to WestQuay.

Going before Southampton City Council’s licensing committee on October 17, it will consider if the Queen’s Terrace property will be filled by the eatery.

In the application, the owners Boozy Berry Ltd suggest opening times of 8am to midnight, seven days a week. They also suggest selling alcohol between 10am and 11.30pm, Monday to Sunday, and having live music play between the hours of 10am and 11pm.

No reference was made to how long food would be served for, or what type of food would be served.

But the bid has received criticism from a neighbour.

Dr Paul Doherty, who lives above Nook’s proposed location in Havelock Chambers, noted a number of concerns.

“I have young children and I do not want then exposed to the alcoholic environment, secondary tobacco smoke, noise and drunken patrons, which will be a consequence of this approval,” he said.

“They are entitled to a peaceful and safe environment.”

The resident also noted that the council had previous served a noise order on other businesses that had occupied that space.

He added: “We have suffered considerable disturbance in the past and your approval will likely see this occur again. Furthermore, the soundproofing of this unit is for an office and will undoubtedly compound the noise issue.

“I do hope that the right of peaceful existence is uphold over profits of an alcohol seller – of which there are many choices on Oxford Street already.”

The licensing meeting shall be held in Southampton’s Civic Centre from 6pm on Wednesday, October 17.
