I ACCEPT that modern political structures are complex. The choice facing Alan Blandford (Echo letters, September 24) was whether to believe the considerable volume of factual EU information on the internet, or what was ‘claimed’ by one deceased politician half a century ago.

Democracy will only flourish if people can make choices based on fact. In recent weeks we have seen a couple of letters claiming, incorrectly, that the EU is undemocratic because MEPs are definitely unelected. Others then respond that they fully agree.

If this kind of dialogue influences the way that some people vote in the future, then it will have achieved a subtle assault on democracy, whether or not intentionally.

Justice is best served by establishing the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I would suggest that democracy is best served when people are given the facts, the full facts, and nothing but the facts.

We don’t live in a perfect world, but that’s no reason not to strive for the best.
