A HOSPITAL porter whose quick thinking saved his colleague’s life has picked up two awards at an annual ceremony.

Daniel Spacagna was honoured at the WOW! Awards Gala Ceremony for his efforts, including CPR, to keep Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) worker John Bauldry alive after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Daniel has been shortlisted for a national award for his heroics.

Speaking after his Rotary Club of Winchester and Corporate Services Division award wins, Daniel, from Eastleigh, said: “I’m over the moon. I was delighted just to be invited to this event, so I’m really happy to have won two awards.

“The response to what happened that night from everyone in the trust has been lovely and the most important thing is that John is back fighting fit now.

“I’m really grateful that I went on a first aid course so I knew what to do and that things panned out the way they did.”

The fifth annual WOW! Awards, organised by Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, celebrated the care and dedication shown by staff at the trust hospitals in Winchester, Andover and Basingstoke over the past year.

Among the other winners on the night was the critical care team at the RHCH, which won the Surgical Services Division Award for their care of a patient with a life-threatening stomach condition.

Mary Meeks, clinical matron for critical care, said: “We all remember this patient well because it was a complicated case and he was with us in intensive care for around three months.

“He needed very intensive treatment and care and the whole team was involved in looking after him. It was a proper team effort and I am really proud of all of them.”

Last year, the trust received 3,024 WOW! nominations for staff who had made a difference to someone by exceeding expectations or going the extra mile.

Staff can be nominated by colleagues, patients or visitors throughout the year, with a handful of winners selected by the trust’s public governors each month.

Liz Padmore, chairman of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “As chairman of our organisation I see and hear about the many great examples of the positive difference our staff make to patients, their families, their friends and to each other.

“I am delighted to see you get the recognition you deserve.”
