A MAN extradited from India has made a 22-minute court appearance, charged with the murder of Eastleigh student, Hannah Foster.

Maninder Pal Singh Kohli spoke only to confirm his name when he appeared at Southampton Magistrates' Court on Monday afternoon.

The 39-year-old father of two was flanked by two security guards and was wearing the same patterned shirt and trousers in which he was brought home from India at the weekend.

A packed court listened as six charges were read out by court clerk, Wendy Moore.

Kohli is accused of murder, taking Hannah Foster against her will, detaining her against her will, raping her, unlawfully killing her and also attempting to pervert the course of justice by removing and disposing of her body.

The court heard how Kohli, a sandwich delivery driver, was arrested in July 2004 in West Bengal after a warrant for his arrest was issued by Southampton Magistrates' Court in April 2003.

Following a statement from prosecutor, Alisdair Nesbitt, regarding the prosecution's case, Judge Lynne Matthews was asked that Kohli be remanded in custody.

Defence lawyer David Young said he would be making no application for bail for Kohli, who has no fixed address in Hampshire. Kohli did not enter pleas to any of the charges.

Mr Young told the court: "These proceedings will be contested."

Kohli fought his extradition to the UK and has consistently protested his innocence.

A post-mortem examination has shown that Hannah, who was studying for A-levels, had been raped and strangled.

The 17-year-old student at Barton Peveril College, Eastleigh, who was from Portswood in Southampton, disappeared after a night out with friends. Her parents, Hilary and Trevor, did not attend the hearing.

A preliminary hearing will take place at Winchester Crown Court on Friday.
