A COUPLE who run an alpaca farm near Droxford are preparing for their annual open day.

Karen and Peter Oglesby started keeping the Llama-like creatures around nine years ago and their herd now numbers about 70.

Mr and Mrs Oglesby say alpacas are ideal stock for the smallholder to farm and can provide a good return for investment, without having to enter the food chain.

Originating from South America, alpacas, which are members of the Camelid family, have been bred for thousands of years for their luxurious fibre.

These gentle and peaceful creatures spend their time grazing, resting, chewing the cud and rolling in dust baths.

The alpacas will be on show during the open day on Saturday, August 11, from 2pm - 5pm and the farm can be found in the Meon Valley, one mile south of Droxford on the A32.

Visitors can take part in a farm walk among the alpacas, and watch the cria (baby alpacas) and learn all about them.

There will be spinning demonstrations and products to buy that are made from alpaca fibre, such as throws and luxury duvets, as well as children's activities and afternoon tea.

Entry is £5 for adults, £2 for children. No dogs allowed.
