ALMOST 30 industrial units in Southampton were left without water yesterday after a mains burst.

Businesses and industrial units in Redbridge were left without water for most of the day due to a burst water main on Test Lane.

The road was closed at the junction with Gover Road at around 7am and signage was put in place at the roundabout.

The incident left 28 industrial units in the area, including the Daily Echo, without water during the day.

Southern Water engineers provided the businesses affected with bottles of water and carried out works on Test Lane throughout the day.

The incident also affected the nearby railway line.

A South Western Railway statement said: “Our control centre has been made aware of a burst water main near the railway between Redbridge and Romsey which has began to affect the railway line.”

The line was blocked for trains travelling from Redbridge towards Romsey while trains travelling from Romsey to Redbridge had to run at a reduced 20mph through the affected area.

Engineers from Network Rail worked at the site along with Southern Water engineers to minimise travel disruption.

A Southern Water spokesperson said: “We became aware of a burst in the Test Lane area. Our teams are working as fast as possible to fix the problem. There was some disruption to rail services but trains were running in both directions by noon. We apologise for any inconvenience called and thank residents for their patience.”

The cause of the incident has not been determined yet.

It was not confirmed how long it would take to solve the issue but the water was not restored to the buildings when the Daily Echo went to press.

The incident came after two people were rescued in Purbrook on Monday after their van was submerged in flood water.

Firefighters from Fareham and Waterlooville were called after the vehicle got stuck in Pigeon House Lane.

The van was roughly a metre deep in water when the people inside raised the alarm at about 1.40pm.
