THOUSANDS of people are set to flock to a new German-style beer festival from today.
A massive beer tent has been erected in Guildhall Square for Southampton’s version of Oktoberfest, the internationally-renowned festival.
The four-day event opens today and is modelled on the Munich spectacle which attracts more than six million visitors a year.
Beers from across the continent will be served in traditional Bavarian-style Stein glasses, while there will also be a six-piece ‘oompah’ band and a variety of Bavarian-style cuisine.
James Ward, event organiser, said: “We’re expected to be one of the largest Oktoberfests on the south coast. The entertainment, beer and food selection is second to none.
"We’re excited to show Southampton how Bavarian culture is celebrated."
Evening sessions will run today, Friday and Saturday between 6.30pm and 11pm with last entry at 7.30pm, while afternoon sessions take place from 1.30pm until 5.30pm on Saturday and Sunday with last entry at 2.30pm.
