ONE of Winchester's busiest streets is due to be closed for two consecutive Sundays next month.

Hampshire County Council has announced that Jewry Street will be shut in order to carry out drainage works.

The closure will affect most of the road, with no access to the section between St George's Street and North Walls.

Motorists using Winchester's one-way system can expect longer journey times as a result.

They will be diverted from St George's Street into High Street, then Upper High Street, down Gladstone Street and into Sussex Street.

Motorists will then have to turn right into City Road, which then feeds into North Walls.

The likely date of the first closure is Sunday, August 12. The second is expected to come seven days later.
