In one of the most exciting races in the history of the event, the Swiss entry Alinghi won the 32nd America's Cup by the narrowest of margins, beating Emirates Team New Zealand by five wins to two.
The Kiwis suffered a penalty for not keeping clear approaching the top mark for the second time. Alinghi rounded 12 seconds ahead and looked secure. Then an enormous wind shift enabled Emirates Team New Zealand to lay the finish line, which was now upwind. As Alinghi struggled to drop her spinnaker the Kiwis turned to fulfil their penalty turn, but now slowed down, they could only watch in horror as the Swiss slid across the line, just one second ahead.
