SIR - The tragic events of July 3 on Winchester Road, Alresford, when Mr Allan Knight, a local milkman lost his life, have left many residents of Alresford stunned and deeply saddened.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
During the first week of June, Winchester Road was resurfaced. In an e-mail to me on June 15, Colin Taylor, area director of Hampshire Highways, stated that this work had been carried out because the road had been highlighted by the county council's safety engineering team as being a location where accidents were starting to occur.
The resurfacing was paid for with funds allocated through the safety engineering budget, which is aimed entirely at reducing the number of road accidents in the county.
On the day of the accident, some four weeks after the resurfacing, the white line markings had not been reinstated.
In fact, they were reinstated the day after the accident and took little more than one hour to complete.
Whether the lack of road markings was a contributory factor in the accident is something that will have to be decided by those qualified to do so.
Brent Davis, Winchester Road, Alresford.
