THE UK Independence Party has selected its candidate to contest Winchester in the upcoming general election.

Martin Lyon will represent UKIP for the Winchester and Chandler's Ford constituency in the upcoming vote on June 8.

Mr Lyon is a married father of four, has served for four years on Hampshire County Council.

He has been a member of the party since 2000.

He is a chartered surveyor, having worked in the construction industry for 28 years.

Last week, Labour and the Greens also selected their candidates.

The Green Party selected Andrew Wainwright, while Labour have chosen Mark Chaloner.

A resident of the city for more than 20 years, Mr Wainwright has recently been speaking out about air pollution, which is responsible for tens of thousands of premature deaths every year.

Mark Chaloner was Labour's candidate in 2015 and is a family law barrister.

He is also a councillor and finance portfolio holder on Southampton City Council.

Winchester's current MP Steve Brine will contest the seat for the Tories and Jackie Porter will again challenge him for the Liberal Democrats.
