STANDARDS at a Winchester primary school have risen, according to its latest Ofsted report.

Bishop's Waltham Junior School was rated 'Good' at its recent inspection, having been told it needed to improve back in 2014.

The mixed school on Oak Road, which has 226 pupils, was praised for changes such as more extra-curricular activities, provisions for those special educational needs or disabilities, and its well-behaved students.

In 2016 the proportion of children that reached the expected level in reading, writing and maths was above the national average, with many making particular progress in maths.

Headteacher Darren Campbell said: "During the inspection the pupils, as always, demonstrated an incredible enthusiasm for their learning and showed immense pride in their school. The whole team, staff and governors, at Bishop's Waltham Junior School is delighted with the outcome and we will continue to strive for excellence.

"I consider myself a very fortunate individual to be headteacher of such a wonderful school. The staff, governors, parents and community work together so well to ensure that we provide the best possible education for the pupils that attend.

"As for the pupils, well, they are a delight and a real credit not only to the school but to their parents and community of Bishop’s Waltham."

To improve further, the school was told it must ensure teachers set goals to stretch and challenge the most able pupils.

In March, a cash boost from the county council was agreed for the school towards a major two-storey expansion, which will allow it to increase its intake from a two to a three-form entry for up to 360 children.

The authority decided to award £3.37m to be shared between the Junior School and Bishop's Waltham Infants.

Construction is due to start in the autumn with a planned completion of summer 2018.
