A BUSKING bonanza saw musicians of every kind battle it out in a bid to take home a special prize.

The Summer Festival in Westbourne welcomed nine different buskers who took turns to busk at different locations around the village.

Each of them performed a 20 minute set, branding ukeleles, double bases, guitars and talented voices, as Westbourne folk tapped their feet along to the tunes.

Local judges included local musician and event organiser Rich Baxter, as well as Rosalind Fountain - a national competition judge for Open Mic UK and Theme Star.

Their decision was announced at a special reception at Camden Bar, Seamoor Road which was packed full of supporters.

Mr Baxter said: “It has been so much fun today. It was a difficult decision to split the talent. The decision on the winning band was unanimous, however, with brother’s duo, ‘Choppers Children’ winning the competition and being awarded with a £100 gig at Camden Bar in Westbourne. Michael and Ben Poczapsky really impressed us with their originality and musical flair. They are deserving winners.”

In second place was 14-year-old Calvin Glen, who was presented with Monster Turbine Pro Gold ear phones. Joint third place was awarded to the four-piece folk group, The Darwins, and soloist E J Evans who shared the £50 cash prize.

The event was funded by the Westbourne Business Improvement District (BID).

Association chairman, Steve Taylor, said: “It’s been a busy week in Westbourne with so many events going on as part of the Summer Festival. We’ve had lots of people visiting Westbourne for the first time and many locals enjoying the packed programme too.

“It’s been great to get the Westbourne name out there and remind everyone what a great place it is to come and visit and relax with friends or shop.”
