A WINCHESTER University student has said thank you to the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service for rescuing him after he got stuck while trying to break into his own house.

Dean Leal, 19, got stuck in a ground floor window at his home in May Tree Close, Badger Farm, following a night of pub golf forcing firefighters to remove the frame to free him.

The second year creative writing student said: “We were doing pub golf, I was pretty drunk and I’d lost my keys.

“I saw the window and thought it would be fine. I thought I was a bit more slender than I was!”

Mr Leal said the ordeal resulted in him having four stitches in his right hand across the knuckles after the glass was smashed. He was taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital by South Central Ambulance.

He was rescued after his nextdoor neighbour, Alex, saw him wedged and called the police. Mr Leal said Alex was reluctant to remove him given the amount of glass nearby.

Fortunately his housemates were able to see the funny side.

“I thought someone would be in,” he added. “I went in head first and did this sort of wiggle. Obviously it didn’t work!”

Watch manager Kev Robson, of Winchester Fire Station, said the crew were called out to the property at 2.30am yesterday.

He said: “He tried to get in through the smallest window possible and managed to get stuck.

“We had to do a little bit of first aid because the glass had broken and cut his arms. We had to break in and remove the frame and take him out with the window. He was chatting away and was quite amusing.”

Mr Leal said he would be spending the rest of day hibernating in his bed to forget the incident as well as the £200 fee to replace the window.
