POLICE are cracking down on motorcyclists riding their machines in woodland near the M27 at Chilworth.

Romsey-based Inspector Jackie Willson is appealing for the public’s help to catch the culprits and warned the rogue bikers they risk losing their bikes if they continue with their anti-social behaviour.

Residents at Chilworth Drove complained to the police about the activity in Lord’s Wood which stretches from the M27 to the Southampton City boundary.

Inspector Willson said the problem started last year but in recent weeks officers had seen an increase in complaints.

“These bikes are quite noisy. We’d like the public to try and get the registration number of the motorbikes it they can, so that we can speak to those responsible and give them a warning,” said Inspector Willson.”

She addedd that horse-riders using the woodlands had also reported problems with motorcyclists frightening their mounts.

“We had reports of four quad bikes and motorbikes being used in the woods at the weekend.

“Officers tried to approach the riders of two motorbikes, but they sped off. One rider was wearing a full-face helmet. If we catch them and they ignore the warning they are given, their bikes will be confiscated,” concluded Inspector Willson. Anyone with information about who is behind the illegal motorcycling in the woodlands is asked to contact PC Claire Bates, at Romsey Police Station, on 101.
