A DERELICT eyesore in Basing View is being demolished as part of plans to transform the ageing Basingstoke business park.

Work to demolish Scott House started last week, and it will be turned into a temporary car park before a developer rebuilds on the site.

It is the third building in Basing View to be demolished – Loddon House and City Wall House were taken down in 2011.

The demolitions are among the first steps in Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s ambitious £200million transformation of Basing View.

According to Councillor Ranil Jayawardena, the council’s deputy leader, the former URS headquarters are a town “eyesore”.

The 1960s-era building has been empty since 2007, and though boarded up, it was a frequent target for vandals.

“I’m pleased another eyesore is going for good,” Cllr Jayawardena said. “The regeneration of Basing View is really gathering pace, and this is part of preparing the business area for its bright future.

“The demolition will not only help improve the image of the area, by removing a vacant and obsolete building in the short term, but will also offer a more attractive ‘blank canvas’ for those wanting to move into the area.”

The demolition work, landscaping, and opening up of the car park will be complete by spring next year.
