FIREFIGHTERS tackled a lorry fire yesterday following a suspected collision on the M3 near Winchester.

Part of the northbound carriageway was closed and traffic slowed as firefighters dealt with the incident reported just after 2.30pm.

Hampshire police believed a collision occurred which led to a Skoda Fabia rolling over and ending up on the hard shoulder of the carriageway of the motorway at junction 10 at Hockley.

All four occupants of the car escaped without serious injury. They were taken to hospital as a precaution.

A flat bed lorry, with a vehicle on the back, continued on to junction eight at Popham where it caught fire.

Three appliances and 14 firefighters tackled the incidents, one from Winchester and two from Basingstoke. They used compressed air foam to put out the flames.

PC John Bownes from the Whitchurch Roads Policing unit said: “We are investigating whether or not there was any contact between any vehicles and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw any of the vehicles involved driving prior to it.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Whitchurch Roads Policing unit on 101.
