BISHOP’S Waltham will be celebrating its independent shops next month.

Shops, cafes and salons shall remain open until 7pm on July 4 as part of a national campaign to boost the non-chain stores.

The issue has been high profile in Bishop’s Waltham with the controversial planning application for a Sainsbury’s superstore.

The Independents Day on July 4 will allow shoppers more time to support local businesses as well as take advantage of special offers, events and freebies.

Free tastings, goodie bags, 10 per cent off offers, prize draws, a treasure hunt for children, and drinks receptions are just some of the things going on throughout the town. Music and other entertainment has also been organised.

Antiques expert and TV John Cameron, of Cash in the Attic and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, will be joining in the fun on the day.

The nationwide campaign, organised by the National Skills Academy for Retail, is now in its third year, with Bishop’s Waltham taking part for the first time.

The event is coordinated by Winchester City Council’s market towns’ development officer, Heidi Isa, and members of the town chamber of trade.

Jenny Coombs, from card shop Best Wishes, said: “Bishop’s Waltham is full of independents so this event is the perfect opportunity to showcase the choice available in the town centre. It is also a great way for us to show our loyal customers how much we appreciate their support.”

Steve Miller, chairman of the chamber of trade, said: “Bishop Waltham businesses are passionate about promoting their unique retail offer to local people.”

Robert Humby, deputy leader of Winchester City Council, added: “This event is a great example of how our recently-appointed market towns’ development officer can drive forward local events in collaboration with local business.”
