ANGRY residents in Alresford fear a child cyclist could be killed by a large pothole on a local road.

People living in the Grange Road area have complained several times to the county council but so far nothing has been done to fix the hole close to the Stratton Bates recreation ground.

Louise England, of Grange Close, said she will place a police traffic cone in the hole to warn road users of the danger.

“I have been onto the council four times starting two weeks ago but no-one has come to look at it. It is just getting deeper and deeper. It is nearly five inches deep.

“I am going to put a cone in; I’m scared a child will down into it on a bike and die, or at least have a very severe accident.”

Cllr Seán Woodward, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council said: "The pothole in Grange Road is to be repaired this week. The wet weather last year followed by another cold winter has added to the number of pot holes and other defects, and increased the pressure on the highways service.

“Additional resources have and continue to be provided and are being used across the county. We are currently prioritising safety repairs to manage this significant workload. Beyond this, the County Council continues to invest in planned structural highway maintenance through the Operation Resilience programme, an approach that aims to ensure Hampshire's roads are strengthened and remain in good condition for longer."
