KEEN to maintain momentum from the London Olympics, Winchester will be going cycling mad this summer.

Winchester CycleFest will feature a Cycle Fair to mark the end of National Cycle week, followed by a family cycle day and the Winchester Criterium race.

The events were formally launched at Winchester’s Holiday Inn on Wednesday (April 10), with Wintonian and cycling commentator, Anthony McCrossan, on hand to introduce cyclists from top UK teams Felt Colbornes, Ride 24/7 and VC St Raphael.

Winchester City Council is co-ordinating CycleFest in partnership with British Cycling, Cycle Tours UK, Hampshire County Council and Winchester BID.

Cllr Vicki Weston, portfolio holder for planning and transport at the city council, said: “These two days of epic cycling action are for the 80,000 people who marked the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the district last year. We look forward to the people of Winchester turning out in their thousands to enjoy sport in the city once again.”

The Winchester Cycle Fair takes place on June 23, at the Broadway, while the Winchester Criterium race and Family Cycle Day both happen on Sunday, August 11.
