John & Mavis CASSON

I knew John as the most gentlemanly of all head teachers, joining Robert Mays in 1976 as Head of Chemistry. On interview, he discovered I had another interview the following day and, on offering me the job, he asked if I wasnted to attend the next interview so I could choose which school I wanted. I told him then that if he had that much cpnfidence in me, I need look no further and gladly accepted the post. I was there through to his retirement and beyond, and he repaid my confidence with several key promotions. He had a wicked way of getting his own way. When something needed doing which you really didn't agree with completely he'd just smile and say 'well just do it for me' with a gleam in his eye. He will long be remembered with great affection. I knew Mavis rather less well though did enjoy the occasional BBQ at St Cross with them both. On his retirement, school bought him a new mountain bike!
