ONE of the best-known of Shakespeare's comedies visits Winchester this summer, but with a slight twist.

Twelfth Night opens with the line, "If music be the food of love, play on", and, in this production, there is a full, live jazz band who willingly oblige.

The Works Theatre Company production takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Winchester Cathedral's Inner Close at 7.30pm on Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12.

In this lavish production of Shakespeare's classic play, some of the Bard's best-loved characters appear, including the "shipwrecked Viola", "the love-struck Orsino" and the "much-maligned Malvolio".

The play also features some of Shakespeare's best comic moments with the drunkards, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew, and the outrageous Feste, who also supplies the classic songs in the pieces which have been newly scored by composer, Tarek Merchant.

The production is a great evening's entertainment for the whole family, but some eyebrows may be raised at Malvolio's special striptease, revealing his yellow cross-gartered stockings!

Audiences are welcome to take picnics and wine. However, organisers advise that you wrap up warm just in case! Outdoor Shakespeare is, after all, a great British tradition, whatever the weather.

Tickets are available from the Cathedral box office on 01962 857275. Prices are £12.50/Under 16s and students £6.50. Doors open at 6.45pm.
