The cluttering-up of Winchester

SIR — Thanks for giving the English Heritage report on Winchester such prominence. The references to street clutter had particular resonance for our group, which is campaigning for making the Winchester street scene less shabby and more cared for, particularly in the historic centre.

If only “they” would fix the broken pavements, clear the weeds and gullies and paint the street furniture! It is also pertinent to observe that English Heritage (and others) worry about minor changes to private property in the conservation area, but not about the publicly-owned streets in which they are situated.

How about “listed streets”, with proper controls over equipping, alteration and maintenance of their roadways, pavements and street furniture of all descriptions?

A prime example of inappropriate street furniture is the siting of three ads for Serco on the roundabout right next to King Alfred’s statue. How insensitive can “they” get?

Peter Grant, Shabby Winchester Group, Symonds Street, Winchester.
