Loyal staff will be missed

SIR - I would like to add some comments to fuel the fire which I'm sure Mr Sudbury's letter (Obvious Why Post Office Is On The Move', Chronicle, March 27) will provoke.

One must assume from the statement of this new supplier of post office services that either they consider our present post office counter assistants grossly overpaid, or the recently recruited ones unworthy of a similar wage.

It seems totally demeaning to treat the former and the new staff in this way.

I would like to express appreciation and thanks to all the present counter assistants, from whom I have always experienced courtesy, helpfulness and friendly service, frequently marvelling at their calm demeanour when confronted with non-English speaking customers or disgruntled ones. I shall miss them.

It is to be hoped that many others in Winchester feel the same and give voice to their feelings.

There have often been lengthy queues, I know, and I have to admit to being impatient on occasions; but for some of us it has been an opportunity to engage in friendly chat with those nearby and to observe the younger generation in a non-threatening situation.

As one of the former post office workers I would like to thank all the customers who came to see us to thank us and who said they would miss us, we will miss you too. I worked in the post shop and toll the bosses that said we were paid too much all I can say is I would like to see them do the job!
