The Art of Conversation
Like a lot of Winchester residents, I leave the city a lot. Not on the daily commute to the capital, but right across the UK.
As much as I love being able to look out at the cathedral and wander down the High Street nodding to local people as I pass, it’s nice to get out. Some weeks, I don’t actually leave the city centre, let alone jump in the car. Cathedral-city fever, if you like, sets in.
I’ve noticed that Winchester has quite a unique mix of people, and a blend of interesting folk that’s not really replicated anywhere else.
I’ll never stop talking to people as I pass them, queue with them or sit alongside them in a coffee shop, and I’ve yet to find a place to beat Belgarum.
I’ve looked back at the number of business cards that are in my wallet from this week, and the new numbers and email addresses in my phone – and go, “wow”. We’re really lucky to live amongst such interesting people.
So when you’re stuck in a queue, grumbling and moaning along, why not make a few friends? You have no idea where a conversation can lead.
