So everything in Winchester costs 2.5% more today? That’s not quite the reality, but we shouldn’t forget the burden a few more pence here and there add up to for our smaller retailers.

We’re a city with a great identity, not just because of our history, but because our smaller shops and businesses make us a unique place to visit.

We should be grateful that we’re not a copy cat ‘super mall’ indoor shopping centre with the same shops, that look the same as every other town and city across the country.

Shopping in Winchester is a great experience, and we need to remember to support our local businesses. There’s a ‘local’ option for most things in our city, and there’s a misconception that they will all be more expensive – which just isn’t the case.

Our smaller shops have the benefit of being able to really look after their customers, understand their needs and build a relationship that makes shopping an altogether nicer experience.

The heart and the soul of shopping in Winchester comes from the retailers who deal with you, make you feel special – and while there’s less money around post Christmas – I foresee you’ll be welcomed with even more open, grateful arms.
