Jewry Street is One Way Only Drivers!
I spent part of yesterday evening taking part in what can be considered a particularly regular ‘Winchester’ communal activity.
Wondering up from the bottom of the city centre, meandering my way through St George’s Street and up to Jewry Street, I had to stop and stare like many others, as I saw a problem unfold before my eyes.
From the car park behind the Discovery Centre, a car emerged and turned right, the wrong way through the one-way system. Despite the hooting and the flashing of lights, the car continued its path until the driver reached the lights that split St George’s Street left and right before realising he may have made previously made a wrong decision.
Yet, I can’t blame him. There’s no signs to say “whatever you do, turn left or you’ll look a wally” when you drive out of the Discovery Centre car park. I have to ask – why ever not?!
And what did most people along the street do? Many pointed and laughed. It happens so often along that street that most local people seem to find this amusing, as opposed to considering the dangerous consequences. Perhaps Hampshire County Council would like to consider digging out one of those unused road signs from the tunnel in Chesil Street and place it on a lamp post before anything more serious happens.
