I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Cricket legend David Gower recently, when the former England Captain received an Honorary Doctorate for his contribution to Sport from the University of Winchester.

Basked in a simmering shade of autumn sunshine, the City’s Cathedral hosted the processional graduation event.

After pre-booking interview time with Gower before the Business and Sport Faculty Graduation day, I was not informed of the specific time I had to be at the city’s premier location to interview the Sky Sports anchor.

I arrived at around 9:50am, and after confirming my attendance with the University’s press office team I had approximately 30 seconds to set-up my camera kit, tripod, check audio levels, white balance, focus and to compose myself, as Gower the professional that he is just waited patiently to be asked my first question.

The interview itself lasted around three minutes where I asked David about his connection to Winchester, in which he detailed how he was married in the city’s cathedral; in addition he spoke highly of Hampshire and the doctorate he received.

As a big cricket fan, for me it was a dream come true to be able to interview David and hopefully I will have the opportunity to meet many more high profile people in the future. David’s kind words of praise to the University’s graduates, I know were warmly accepted as his lasting slice of advice remained “just see what happens and smile your way through, that’s my motto.”
