Fears for elderly as winter deaths rise
skeptik wrote: Both parties have produced a lot of gas but have done little to change things. 31 thousand last winter and 36 thousand when one Ed Miliband was in office. We have to stop supporting a failed and failing system of government and return to democracy - to do that the old parties would have to be 'put down' and new visions supported. Pipe dream? Maybe, so we carry failing. The difference is that the government of which Ed Miliband was a member, took action and increased the Winter Fuel Allowance. This Tory-led government drastically reduced it as a money-saving measure, and this is the result. I wonder how much money they saved and whether they considered the additional loss of lives was worth it.

Banned: Major blow to mass cycle events in Hampshire
1.41pm Thursday 28th November 2013
SuperTed5 wrote: Lets hope this is the first in a series of steps to ban cyclists from roads altogether. I see a world where cyclists and pedestrians use the paths together, and a cyclist will cycle at a safe speed and dismount when a pedestrian is walking and wheel their bike around them instead of obnoxiously ringing their bell. Wanna save lives and find the easiest way to stop so many cyclists deaths - get them off the road.Or remove drivers who cant drive as they killed 1774 people last year but only 122 were cyclists, You want to save 122 lives but removing the minority of idiot drivers (and am able to diffence an idiot driver to a good one and not tar everyone including myself with the same brush)would save 1774 lives. You suggest banning something that would save 122 livesa year out of 63,705,000 people. Allthough 1774 is 1774 too many. But I dont care as it wont happen, Just your fantasy. The wiggle NF events WILL continue without the showground.

Gang attack man in his home and steal Christmas presents
I'd firstly like to point out he's 50, not 60. Secondly, it's true when they say the media never get the full story. At the TIME of the attack, 4 neighbours were on the phone to the police at the same time. As his daughter I personally can't wait till they find the scum who did it and justice is done.

Hampshire braced for cold snap
Brite Spark wrote: This year's first taste of Winter? I seem to remember January to April being particularly Baltic.Agreed. This is just the usual Echo writers' incompetence with the English language. A re-read of a first draft, or getting a second person to proof it first, would've shown that probably what he meant to say was "this season's first taste of winter" as obviously Jan to Apr were freezing too. I'm not sure how the Echo recruits its writers, but I'm sure a lot of it must be through "favours" rather than qualifications.

Excellent idea - lets reduce our dependencies on fossil fuels as much as possible! Though (i dont understand Solar panels too much) do we get enough sun in this country to generate any power?

Seems to be a perfectly standard compensation package for an enforced change in working - many private companies will pay in a similar way. However, non-car drivers should not be receiving it.

New plea to stop mass cycling event in New Forest
General Grievance wrote:
Personally not keen on New Park as the starting point. Much prefer the college at Brock with a proper car park and brick buildings for registration but mainly as I don't like to pull out straight onto such a main road. It is dangerous and does undoubtedly cause issues for other road users as the groups would not have had time to thin out. I ride to the event so not concerned by parking issues but New Park does at least keep a lot of parked cars away from the centre of Brockenhurst. NIMBY nonsense and carefully selected photos / headlines by the Echo don't really merit further comment. I have witnessed some litter being left despite clear guidance to the contrary from the event organisers as well as some poor riding but this is a very much the minority and more responsible riders will generally offer guidance in very clear terms when witnessed. Demand for tickets to the events is really high, all the local sportives sell out very quickly with all of this free advertising. Team Sky /Jaguar event tomorrow is sold out too. Dumping mud and throwing tacks on the road should embarrass all local residents, just ridiculous and makes us all look a little backward. We need to mature a little and accept that we need to share and play nicely surely?

City in plea to sell off artwork
