Alex Hales' one-day international debut was on hold as forecast rain delayed the start and was already threatening a washout in the first Royal London Series match in Bristol.

England captain Alastair Cook confirmed on the eve of this first of five fixtures against India that Hales is to be his new opening partner, with Ian Bell dropping down to number three.

But with rain already set in at the scheduled start time of 1030, and a grim radar around Nevil Road for several hours more yet, it seemed Hales may have to wait until Cardiff on Wednesday to apply his Twenty20 international skills in the 50-over format for England for the first time.
