Hamas called for a 24-hour ceasefire in Gaza ahead of a major Muslim holiday after Israel resumed its military operations.

A spokesman for the Palestinian group said the truce would be in effect from 2pm (12pm BST) in the lead-up to Eid al-Fitr, which caps the fasting month of Ramadan.

It came after Hamas rejected Israel's offer late on Saturday of a 24-hour extension to a 12-hour humanitarian ceasefire which was respected by both sides.

More rockets were fired towards Israel, prompting the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) to restart operations.

Lt Col Peter Lerner, an Israeli army spokesman, did not confirm whether the IDF would hold fire following the new truce requested by Hamas, but said that troops would carry on demolishing Hamas military tunnels.

Labour former deputy prime minister John Prescott today added his voice to those criticising Israel's bombardment of Gaza, which he described as "brutally disproportionate and grossly indiscriminate".

Lord Prescott said any other country would be made an international "pariah" if it acted in the same way.

And he directly compared the situation in Gaza with a concentration camp, suggesting the Nazi Holocaust should "give Israelis a unique sense of perspective and empathy with the victims of a ghetto".

"Imagine a country claiming the lives of nearly three times as many as were lost in the MH17 plane tragedy in less than three weeks," Lord Prescott wrote in the Sunday Mirror.

"A nation which blasted a hospital, shelled and killed children from a gunboat as they played football on the beach and was responsible for 1,000 deaths, at least 165 of them children, in just two weeks.

"Surely it would be branded a pariah state, condemned by the United Nations, the US and the UK. The calls for regime change would be deafening.

"But these howls of protest are muted. The condemnation softened. For this is Israel."

Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through London yesterday, many of them branding Israel a "terror state".

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, speaking after crisis talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry and other foreign ministers in Paris yesterday, urged both sides to extend the cessation of violence in a bid to stem the loss of life.

"The necessity right now is to stop the loss of life and you stop the loss of life by getting this ceasefire to roll over for 12 hours, or 24 hours or 48 hours, and then again and again," he said.

Israel's latest campaign in the Gaza Strip, which began on July 8, has killed more than 1,050 Palestinians, mainly civilians, according to Palestinian health officials.

Israel has lost 43 soldiers, while two Israeli civilians and a Thai worker have been killed by rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza.

More than 2,400 rockets have been fired toward most of Israel's major cities, but casualties have remained low due to the Iron Dome aerial defence system.

Eid al-Fitr, one of the most important holidays in the Muslim calendar, is expected to begin on Monday or Tuesday, depending on the sighting of the new moon.

The IDF claimed Hamas had continued to launch rockets against Israel after their ceasefire began.

The military force tweeted: " The Iron Dome just intercepted 4 rockets over Beersheba. Hamas continues to fire at Israel from Gaza."

The IDF released a statement denying it was responsible for the deaths of some 15 women, children and UN workers at a UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school in northern Gaza on Thursday.

A spokesman said that the Israeli military force had conducted a "comprehensive inquiry regarding the incident" in Beit Hanoun.

It claimed to have found that a "single errant mortar" hit the school's courtyard when it was "completely empty", despite multiple reports that the premises had been crowded with people seeking shelter.

"The inquiry concluded that during the intense fighting between IDF forces and Hamas militants, the militants operated adjacent to the UNRWA school," the spokesman said.

"The militants fired anti-tank missiles at IDF soldiers, who then responded by firing several mortars in their direction," the army statement said.

"The inquiry... concluded that a single errant mortar landed in the courtyard of the UNRWA school, when it was completely empty.

"The IDF stresses it does not operate or target international organisations in the Gaza Strip, and the ongoing coordination conducted via the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) is continuous without change, even during times of combat.

"In light of the inquiry's findings, the IDF rejects the claims that were made by various officials immediately following the incident, that people were killed in the school premises as a result of IDF operational activity."

It came after former prime minister Gordon Brown decried the bombing or damage to a total of 120 schools - more than 70 run by UNRWA - since the military campaign began in Gaza.

Writing in the Observer, Mr Brown said: "As the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, has said, schools are for learning and must never become theatres of war.

"They should be safe havens for boys and girls, and their violation is a crime against international law.

"And whatever the provocation, their militarisation - by whatever means - should be outlawed."

US President Barack Obama stressed in a call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu his "serious and growing concern" about the number of Palestinian civilian deaths and the loss of Israeli lives, as well as the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Mr Obama also stressed the need for an "immediate, unconditional humanitarian ceasefire" to end hostilities.

And he called for the disarmament of terrorist groups and the demilitarisation of Gaza in order to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Wonder if he took this opportunity to slam Tony Blair's 'war crime' too? You know, the one that many folks say happened when he was a part of that same government. Moreover, in any country other than Britain would a socialist transform into a Lord? Wonder if they have problems sleeping at night with the sound of Karl Marx turning in his grave an' all...?

What a clearly ignorant and unintelligent comment. Just for your information, an ambulance is one of the most unsafe positions to be in. Perhaps you would like to research how many Palestinian ambulances have been blasted to smithereens by the Israelis and just how many Palestinian hospitals have been levelled to the ground by the Israelis. I can assure you that an ambulance ventures onto the streets in Gaza at their peril. The last place a Hamas commander would pick would be an ambulance.
As for your stupid comment regarding tunnels etc. After the last onslaught by the Israelis on Gaza, the whole city and surrounds were left as a large pile of brick dust. The overwhelming need of the Palestinians was for cement, gravel etc in order to make concrete to rebuild the place. Israel closed down Gaza to all deliveries of cement etc, the border entry point of Rafah was subject to strict searches of vehicles and people as was the only other point which allowed Palestinians to enter or leave Gaza. In effect, Israel said to the Palestinians, not only have we levelled the place but we won't allow you to rebuild it either. No cement or building materials were allowed into Gaza. The result was, the building of tunnels, particularly into Egypt which allowed building materials to be smuggled into Gaza. If you saw the film, some tunnels were laid with metal tracks over which carts were pushed along containing building materials. Can I suggest that you get to know what all the trouble is about in the Middle East before giving vent to such unadulterated rubbish.

Ambulances, Schools and Mosques: Hamas’ Top 10 Hiding Places That Are Frustrating Israel’s Fight Against Terror.

The Israel Defence Forces posted video on-line it said showed two Palestinian militants entering an ambulance as they left a building being tracked by the IDF.

In the video, a third person wearing what appeared to be a medical worker’s white coat suggested that Hamas militants are either dressing as medical personnel to avoid detection or that Gaza medical workers are providing them direct aid. It should be noted that Hamas runs the health ministry in Gaza. The tactic worked; the IDF let the ambulance drive off unharmed.

Reporters on the ground in Gaza have pointed out that Hamas is using Gaza’s main Shifa Hospital as its headquarters. The Washington Post reported July 17 that the Gaza City hospital “has become a de facto headquarters for Hamas leaders, who can be seen in the hallways and offices.”

The Post reported the next day that Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zouhri spoke to reporters “standing in front of” the hospital.

Wall Street Journal correspondent Nick Casey posted a photo on Twitter of a Hamas spokesman being interviewed on camera at Shifa Hospital.

“You have to wonder with the shelling how patients at Shifa hospital feel as Hamas uses it as a safe place to see media,” Casey tweeted July 21. He later removed the tweet and the photo. The Jewish American website the Algemeiner posted an article with a screenshot of the photo before it was removed:

• Using mosques to hide rockets

A Washington Post correspondent on June 17 saw Palestinian militants hiding rockets in a Gaza mosque. The Post reported that during a five-hour humanitarian ceasefire last week, “a group of men at a mosque in northern Gaza said they had returned to clean up the green glass from windows shattered in the previous day’s bombardment. But they could be seen moving small rockets into the mosque.”

Using mosques to protect tunnel entrances.

The IDF posted an aerial photo it said showed the spot between a mosque and a school where the entrance to a tunnel was concealed. Hamas has built a network of sophisticated tunnels allowing armed gunmen to sneak into Israel from underground. During one Hamas tunnel attack that was thwarted, the IDF said the militants were armed with handcuffs and tranquilizers, suggesting they were aiming to kidnap Israelis.

Hamas knows the international outcry that would ensue were Israel to bomb a mosque, so it found in the house of worship one of the safest hiding places it could for storing its ordnance and breaking ground for its tunnels.

• Using United Nations schools to hide rockets

For the second time in one week, the United Nations Relief Works Agency, which provides services to Palestinians claiming refugee status, admitted that Hamas had been hiding rockets in its schools.

In its second announcement Tuesday night, UNRWA said it had discovered a hidden rocket cache in a vacant school. The agency said the school in which the rockets were found happens to be situated between two other UNRWA schools that are currently housing 3,000 Palestinians who have fled their homes.

“UNRWA strongly and unequivocally condemns the group or groups responsible for this flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises under international law,” the agency said in a statement.

While the agency put out an official statement, UNRWA’s chief spokesman in Gaza, Chris Gunness, did not immediately post the news on his very active Twitter account; the agency and its spokesman have been accused by Israel supporters of promoting the Palestinian narrative.

• Dressing up as Israeli soldiers

Two squads of heavily armed Hamas gunmen infiltrated Israel through a network of tunnels with the suspected aim of attacking a nearby Israeli community on Monday. In an ensuing gunfight with the IDF, all 10 terrorists were killed as well as four Israeli soldiers. The IDF later said that all of the Hamas militants were disguised as Israeli soldiers, wearing exact replicas of IDF uniforms, from their head coverings down to their kneepads and standard issue military boots. Some were also wearing explosives-packed suicide vests.

This footage from the IDF shows the bodies with the full IDF attire:

Gazza's young get killed digging tunnels yet no marches for those poor soul's, or the six-thousand plus Muslims Butchered by ISSI in Iraq,

Mosul: Muslims Ruling:

Christians in Mosul Iraqi Christians who were forced to flee the northern city of Mosul under threat of forced conversion or execution by jihadists have spoken of their terror as churches were turned into mosques and their homes and property confiscated.

The expulsion of one of the world's oldest Christian communities provoked condemnation and anguish from figures as diverse as the pope and Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, who lambasted the Islamic State (Isis) for its "criminality and terrorism".

Last weekend Isis gave the city's Christians a stark choice: convert to Islam, pay a religious tax, or face death. "They said there is no place for Christians in the Islamic state," one distraught refugee said from the safety of Bashiqa, 16 miles from Mosul. "Either you become Muslim or you leave." Mosul's last 1,500 Christian families were reportedly robbed at Isis checkpoints as they fled.

Gazza: Hamas Muslims Ruling:
Hamas and its supporters display gruesome pictures of dead and wounded children in order to gain sympathy for their portrait of Israel as the villain intent on killing Palestinians. In response, Israel cites the need to stop Hamas from firing thousands of rockets at its own children, who are being forced to live in bomb shelters, as well as the need to eliminate the tunnels that Hamas dug into Israel in order to carry out terror attacks against Israelis. One tunnel opening was found underneath an Israeli kindergarten.

But who built those tunnels? The answer is Hamas, of course—using some of the same children who are now trapped under fire in Gaza.

The Institute for Palestine Studies published a detailed report on Gaza’s Tunnel Phenomenon in the summer of 2012. It reported that tunnel construction in Gaza has resulted in a large number of child deaths.

“At least 160 children have been killed in the tunnels, according to Hamas officials”

The author, Nicolas Pelham, explains that Hamas uses child laborers to build their terror tunnels because, “much as in Victorian coal mines, they are prized for their nimble bodies”.

Human rights groups operating in Gaza raised concerns about child labor in the tunnels as far back as 2008. Hamas responded by saying it was “considering curbs.” Following Operation Cast Lead in 2009 Hamas softened its position and the Interior Ministry established the Tunnel Affairs Commission (TAC) which, “In response to public concern at a rising toll of tunnel casualties, particularly of child workers…issued guidelines intended to ensure safe working conditions.” No mention is made in the report of the conditions that would result for both Palestinian and Israeli children from building tunnels that would be used to launch terror attacks.

Nor does it seem that Hamas paid much subsequent attention to ensuring the safety of the child workers that it used to build the tunnels that would wind up endangering the lives of many in Gaza. On a tour of the tunnels in 2011, Pelham noted that, “nothing was done to impede the use of children in the tunnels.”

Not only are Hamas misappropriating much of the humanitarian aid supplied to Gaza—800,000 tons of cement were used to construct the terror tunnels into Israel—they are also directly exploiting and endangering Gaza’s youth in their construction and operation....
