Plans to reform Labour's links with the trade unions won the backing of the party's powerful National Executive Committee (NEC).

A senior source said there were only two votes against and one abstention at the NEC meeting, which overwhelmingly backed the proposals in a report drawn up by former Labour and union official Lord Collins.

The result is a boost for Ed Miliband, who has led calls for reform, and the package will now be voted on at a special conference on March 1.
