Steve Martin has received six award nominations - but not for acting.

The Father Of The Bride star is also a banjo picker and is up for six Bluegrass Music Awards after bursting on the scene with his first album - which topped the bluegrass charts for 12 weeks.

He is nominated for instrumental recorded performance, banjo player of the year, best liner notes, best graphic design for a recorded project and recorded event for two songs - Daddy Played The Banjo and The Crow.

Martin, who has played the banjo since he was 17, wrote or co-wrote all of the 15 tracks for the album The Crow: New Songs For The Five-String Banjo.

"We're glad to have him," bluegrass star Del McCoury said of Martin. "He's a good musician, he really is."

Dan Tyminski, a guitarist and singer, and his band are the top nominees for the awards with nine, including entertainer of the year.

The duo Dailey And Vincent have seven.
