James McAvoy might be something of a heartthrob - but he insists he never thinks that he looks good on screen.
The Scottish star, 35, said he has never been comfortable with the way he looks, except in Days Of Future Past, the new film in the X-Men franchise.
He told Radio Times magazine: "I am not somebody who looks spectacular easily.
"I never get into my costume, make-up and hair and go, like, 'F***ing hell, you look gorgeous'."
James, who starred opposite Angelina Jolie in Wanted, added: "Whenever I've had to play somebody who's meant to be, for the sake of the story, attractive, I've always felt slightly uncomfortable, like... 'I hope I can pull this off.' But in this..."
The Atonement and Last King Of Scotland actor said that it was a different story when it came to reprising his role as Charles Xavier in the seventh film in the X-Men Franchise, this time set in the 1970s.
The actor, who is married to actress Anne-Marie Duff, insisted on hair extensions, which took 17 hours.
"As my wife will attest, the 70s is my favourite decade," he said.
On seeing his reflection for the first time, "I was like, 'Yesss!' I ... love the way I look in this film. It's the only time I've ever done that in my whole career."
