Alec Baldwin has been arrested and accused of riding a bike the wrong way on the street and "acting belligerently" towards police officers in New York City.

Police said the 30 Rock star was taken into custody at about 10.15am today (May 13). They said two officers noticed him riding his bicycle the wrong way on 16th Street near Fifth Avenue near Union Square Park.

They said the actor was asked to show identification and accused him of acting belligerently toward the officers, leading to his arrest - although he was later released.

A representative for Baldwin didn't immediately return a request for comment.

Police said the 56-year-old actor was issued a summons for riding a bike the wrong way and for disorderly conduct.
