Gemma Arterton is to star in a new musical version of Made In Dagenham, t he story of a band of female factory workers who staged a strike in protest against sexual discrimination and demanded equal pay.

The stage show is based on the 2010 film of the same name which starred Sally Hawkins and told the true story of the 1968 Ford sewing machinists strike in Dagenham.

The musical is written by Richard Bean - the playwright behind trans-Atlantic hit One Man, Two Guvnors - with music by David Arnold, who has composed for Bond films and Sherlock, and lyrics by Richard Thomas, whose credits include Jerry Springer: The Opera.

Gemma Arterton said: "I'm beyond thrilled to be playing Rita O'Grady in Made in Dagenham. It's an important story that I'm passionate about telling, and we intend to tell it with wit, warmth and, of course, a lot of singing and dancing in this production!"

Directed by Rupert Goold, the show will open at London's Adelphi Theatre on November 5, with previews from October.
